Introduction to Botox
Botox is a protein produced by a bacterium, Clostridium botulinum, which can relax muscles. Botox can be used cosmetically for a number of cosmetic reasons, including reducing forehead wrinkles and frown lines by relaxing the msucles under the wrinkles. Recently, Botox has become more popular for tightening the bands of muscle in front of the neck to minimize their appearance. Botox is also used to prevent excessive sweating.
What to Expect at Your Appointment:
When you come for your Botox injections, you'll be escorted to a private area. You'll receive a series of tiny, quick injections. You won't need numbing anesthetic but we're happy to provide anesthetic if you're worried about pain. The treatments should take under 15 minutes. You can return to your everyday activities, but you should avoid heavy physical exertion and lying down flat, for at least 4 hours. Botox can last up to 4 months and follow-up treatments are needed to prevent wrinkles from returning.
Is it Safe?
Botox is FDA approved as a safe and effective treatment. Side effects are generally minor.
Talk to Dr. E about complications and side effects, which can include: Nausea, msucle weakness, drooping eyelids, facial pain, heartburn, tooth problems, hypertension, dry mouth, soreness or bleeding at the side of injection, and sore throat. If you have a rash or hives, swelling, and difficulty breathing, this may indicate an allergic reaction.
Botox for Gummy Smiles
For most of us, smiling feels great. When a person smiles, it’s very common to expose a small
section of the gums above the teeth. For those with a "gummy" smile, however, smiling can trigger feelings of inadequacy or self-consciousness. People with a ‘gummy smile’ shows a
much larger section of gums, sometimes greater than one-half inch.
At Relax and Smile Dental Care, we utilize non-invasive Botox injections to combat your gummy smile.
A gummy smile can occur due to a hyperactive upper lip muscle or a thin upper lip. To treat this, the dentist will inject Botox into the upper lip, limiting the elevation that can be achieved. The procedure takes under 20 minutes and lasts upwards of 6 months for one series of injections. A person can maintain this look with only 2-3 office visits per year.
